Debate: Nature vs. Nurture

CON: "BEHAVIOR CAN BE TRACED BACK TO GENETIC MAKE-UP"

Information I gained from research:
  • Late 80's many scientists "discovered" a link between Schizophenia and manic depression and alcoholism. But further testing proved these clams completely wrong
  • It has been proven that past the age of ~16 whatever the kid has decided he/she will keep their opinion for the rest of their life and no one can change it.
  • John Watson took (like adopted not kidnapped) an orphan named Albert and demonstrated that the acquisition of a phobia could be explained by the way it was raised, not necessarily born with that phobia. In other words it was how the child was raised that created that phobia not it was born with that phobia. For example I do not like spiders, I just don't. I am almost positive that it was because when I was pretty little like 8-ish, it was near Halloween time and my sister put a spider on my head (a fake rubber one) and I flipped out! I ran around and freaked out constantly. I think this did it because before that I really didn't care about spiders, its not like I liked them or anything, I was neutral, but after that, I won't step near another spider unless I'm going to kill it.
  • B.F. Skinner (a Harvard psychologist) produced pigeons that could "dance" and do figure 8's. This was obviously from strict teachings not being born with that ability. On my feedback I received that I should check my sources and some of my info. might be false. I think this is where that is coming from, I'm not sure how legitimate this website is but I put the information on here just in case it is true.
  • Studies show that a sense of humor is learned from parenting.
  • The majority of people in prisons were brought up in a hostile environment. There are some that weren't brought up that way and are just sick people but this obviously shows that the hostile environment plays a BIG part in the ethics of people.
  • Identical twins are perfect examples. It has been proven that if two identical twins were raised in two completely different environments, they will be different people. This is a perfect example because they look just alike, the also have similar genetic make-up. So this shows perfectly that it is nurture not nature.
  • Studies show that a good percent of people that were raised in an arguing family that ended in a messy divorce, their children will end up that way too.
